The SMACK (Stun My Attacker Compact Keychain) replaced an older 6M volt model after customers pushed for more power in a smaller package. The redesign cut the size roughly in half while increasing voltage and switching to USB recharging. The crackling arc and sound alone stops most threats before contact — but if it doesn't, contact will.

Does a stun gun have to touch skin to work?

No — stun guns require direct contact with the target to deliver a shock. They work through clothing, but the prongs need to be pressed against the body. This is different from a TASER, which fires probes at a distance. When should you choose something other than a keychain stun gun?

A keychain stun gun is a close-contact device — you need to be within arm's reach. That's fine for the scenario it's designed for: someone approaching you in a parking lot, stairwell, or doorway when the stun gun is already in your hand. If you want distance between you and a threat, keychain pepper spray provides 6-12 feet of range and clips to the same keyring. Carrying both is practical — spray for distance, stun for close contact if the spray doesn't stop them.
