How Stun Guns Work
Stun guns are one of the most popular and effective non-lethal self defense weapons available today. Understanding how they work helps you use them correctly and choose the right model for your needs.
What Is a Stun Gun?
A stun gun is a handheld electrical self defense device that delivers a high voltage, low amperage shock to an attacker upon direct contact. Unlike a firearm, a stun gun does not fire a projectile — it requires physical contact with the attacker to deliver its charge. The electrical shock temporarily disrupts the attacker's neuromuscular system, causing disorientation, loss of muscle control, and loss of balance without causing permanent injury.
How the Electrical Charge Works
When the stun gun makes contact with an attacker and the trigger is activated, the device sends a rapid series of electrical pulses into the body. These pulses interfere with the brain's ability to send clear signals to the muscles. The muscles receive confused signals and contract rapidly and uncontrollably, depleting blood sugar and converting it to lactic acid in a matter of seconds. The result is a loss of muscle control and coordination that leaves the attacker temporarily incapacitated — giving you the time you need to escape and call for help.
The electrical charge does not pass from the attacker to you. Even if you are holding the attacker or they are holding you, you will not feel the effect of the stun gun. The shock is localized to the point of contact only.
Voltage vs Amperage — What Really Matters
Stun guns are often marketed by their voltage — you will see models advertised at 1 million, 5 million, or even 80+ million volts. While voltage is important, amperage is the more critical measurement of a stun gun's effectiveness.
Voltage determines the ability of the charge to penetrate clothing and skin. Higher voltage means the charge can push through thicker clothing and reach the body more effectively. Amperage determines the intensity of the shock delivered to the neuromuscular system. A stun gun with higher amperage will have a more powerful and immediate effect on an attacker.
Most stun guns operate between 3 and 8 milliamps. This range is sufficient to cause significant incapacitation while remaining below the threshold that would cause lasting injury or death. See our guide to the highest amperage stun guns for a detailed comparison of the most powerful models we carry.
How Long Does a Stun Gun Incapacitate an Attacker?
The duration of incapacitation depends on how long contact is maintained and the individual being stunned. As a general guideline:
- Half second contact — startles the attacker, causes pain and minor muscle contraction
- 1 to 2 seconds — causes muscle spasms and a dazed mental state
- 3 to 5 seconds — causes loss of muscle control, disorientation, and loss of balance lasting several minutes
Every person reacts differently. Apply the stun gun for as long as safely possible and use the time to move away from the attacker immediately. Do not wait to observe the effect — get to safety and call for help.
Do Stun Guns Work Through Clothing?
Yes. Stun guns are effective through most clothing including denim, cotton, and light jackets. Thicker or heavier materials like heavy leather or multiple layered clothing may slightly reduce effectiveness. Higher voltage models are better at penetrating thick clothing. For best results, aim for areas with thinner clothing or direct skin contact when possible — the neck, face, groin, and underarms are the most sensitive and effective areas to target.
Are Stun Guns Safe?
Yes. Stun guns are non-lethal self defense weapons designed to temporarily incapacitate without causing permanent injury or death. The amperage in a consumer stun gun is too low to cause lasting damage to the heart or other organs. People with pacemakers or other heart conditions may be more vulnerable to electrical devices — stun guns should not be used on individuals known to have these conditions.
Stun guns are safe to carry and use when handled responsibly. Always engage the safety switch when not in use and store your stun gun away from children.
How to Choose the Right Stun Gun
Choosing the right stun gun depends on your lifestyle, comfort level, and intended use. Consider the following:
- Size and portability — Compact stun guns fit easily in a purse or pocket for everyday carry. Larger stun batons offer more reach and power for home defense.
- Amperage — Higher amperage means more stopping power. If maximum effectiveness is your priority choose the highest amperage model in your budget.
- Battery type — Rechargeable stun guns eliminate the need for replacement batteries. Battery powered models may be easier to maintain in some situations.
- Additional features — Many stun guns include a built-in flashlight, personal alarm, or disable pin wrist strap for added safety and utility.
- Disguised models — Disguised stun guns designed to look like everyday items such as a lipstick, pen, or flashlight offer a tactical surprise advantage.
Stun Gun vs TASER — What's the Difference?
The primary difference between a stun gun and a TASER is range. A stun gun requires direct physical contact with an attacker. A TASER fires two probes on wires that can reach an attacker from up to 15 feet away. Both deliver an electrical charge that temporarily incapacitates. See our full Stun Gun vs TASER comparison for a detailed breakdown of both options.
Are Stun Guns Legal?
Stun guns are legal in most US states but restrictions apply in some jurisdictions. Some states and cities prohibit stun guns entirely while others have age restrictions or permit requirements. Always verify local laws before purchasing or carrying a stun gun. See our Stun Gun Laws by State guide for a complete breakdown.
