Are stun guns legal in Florida? Yes — handheld stun guns and TASER devices are legal for civilian purchase, ownership, and carry in Florida. Under Florida Statute § 790.01, eligible adults may carry a stun gun concealed without a permit. Open carry is also explicitly permitted under § 790.053(2)(b) for non-lethal electric devices designed solely for defensive purposes.
Florida Stun Gun Carry Rules
- No Permit Required: Florida's permitless carry law allows eligible adults to carry a stun gun concealed without a government-issued license, background check, or training requirement.
- Open Carry Permitted: Unlike firearms, stun guns and non-lethal electric devices may be openly carried in Florida without restriction.
- Age Requirement: You must be 18 or older to independently purchase or carry a stun gun in Florida. Minors aged 16 or 17 may possess one only under direct supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
- Prohibited Persons: Anyone convicted of a felony whose civil rights have not been formally restored, or individuals subject to domestic violence injunctions, are prohibited from possessing electroshock weapons under § 790.23.

- K-12 school facilities, administrative buildings, and school-sponsored events
- State, county, and municipal courthouses and government meeting halls
- Police stations, sheriff's offices, prisons, jails, and detention centers
- Airport secure areas past TSA screening checkpoints
- College and university campuses — with an exception: Registered students, employees, and faculty may carry a non-projectile handheld stun gun on campus under § 790.06. Dart-firing TASER devices remain prohibited on campus.
