9 Practical Tips for Learning Self Defense Tactics

1. Place Prevention Before Anything

You can walk in well-lit areas at night, have your keys ready in hand when approaching your car, and know what's going on around you.
2. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Each time you leave your home, you should be completely aware of your surroundings. Even when you're doing simple things such as walking the dog, attending a movie at a theatre, or going for a jog, you should be aware of everything going on around you.
If someone were to try to attack you, where are your exit routes? You should know different ways to escape at all times. Walk with your head up as well and eliminate all distractions.
It's easy to become consumed in our cell phones when out and about. As you stare down at your cell phone, are you aware of how many people are surrounding you, who's watching you, or how you can escape if needed? You should also look out for different objects in your surroundings that you could use to protect yourself if needed.
3. Have the Right Tools on You
Having the right tools on you at all times is a great way to keep yourself protected. There are several self-defense items that you can purchase and keep in your purse, pocket, connected to your keychain, or in your car without getting in the way.
Stun guns, tasers, pepper spray, throwing knives, and personal alarms are, to name a few. These are all items that don't require you to take a safety course before purchasing. If you'd like to carry a gun on you, you'll need to take a course and receive a license first.
No matter what self-defense tool you decide to carry, be sure to have it on you at all times. It's even a good idea to have several of these items listed above. You never know when you might need a personal alarm and a stun gun at the same time.
4. Exercise on a Regular Basis
You don't need to be a pro wrestler to learn and practice self-defense. You should, however, exercise on a regular basis to keep up your stamina and muscle strength. Do your best to fit in morning workouts before you head to your job.
Anywhere you can fit them in, do so. Do some cardio and lift a few weights. If you're given an opportunity to run, you'll want to take it.
You'll also want to be in shape so you can run fast and far, preventing your attacker from catching you. When you must fight back, you want to have enough muscle strength to do some damage and to keep the attacker off of you.
5. Prepare to Let Go of Certain Items
Remember, your life is what's most important. Never put yourself in a dangerous situation, trying to save materialistic items. Instead, prepare to let go of certain things such as your purse, wallet, or something else.
If an attacker threatens you and is wanting one of these things, then give it to them. Your life isn't worth keeping your wallet or cell phone over. You can always replace these items, but you can never replace your life.
The best course of action is to throw the items at the attacker or robber and run in the opposite direction. To take things up a notch, you can keep a decoy wallet on you to give up instead.
6. Have a Plan of Action Ready
It's always a good idea to have a plan of action ready in case something were to happen. If you have a self-defense plan to follow, then you won't be as confused or thrown off guard when you're attacked.
You'll know exactly how to respond and what to do. Know where to hit, how to hit, and more. These are all things that you'll learn when in self-defense classes.
The more practice you have, the more comfortable and prepared you'll be to take on an attacker.
7. Don't Be Afraid to Speak Up
When being attacked, don't be afraid to speak up. You should attract as much attention as possible. Before someone is close enough to touch you, loudly tell them to back off.
This is true for any situation where someone is getting closer to you and making you feel uncomfortable. You can shout, "BACK OFF!" Be sure to speak with an authoritative tone as well.
If they touch you, then you can still shout for them to back off and push them back. Don't be afraid to push them off of you while shouting. If your attacker was looking for easy prey, this signals to them that you're not an easy target, and you're ready to fight back.
It won't always scare attackers away, but it will for some, and that makes it worth doing.
8. Know Where to Aim
When it comes time to fight, you'll want to know where to aim. This is important. Some parts of the body are more effective at taking down your attacker than others.
You won't have much time to fight back before your attacker has control over you, so you'll need to know where to hit and act fast. The most vulnerable parts of the body are the face (eyes, ears, nose, and neck), the knees, the groin, and the legs.
Go for these areas first. Whichever one you can get to, hit it using your elbows, head, or knees. These are the most boney parts of your body and will do some damage. When you do hit your attacker, you also want to be sure to put your weight into it.
Putting your weight into it will help you defeat your attacker even if they're bigger than you.
9. Take a Self-Defense Class
The last step is signing up for self-defense classes to learn all the best self-defense moves. There are many different types of self-defense classes you can take. They range from boxing classes to different forms of martial arts.
The best thing to do is to research each type of class and learn the difference between them. With this information, you can then make the best decision for you. Once you begin taking your self-defense classes, you might even find that you're more out of shape than you thought you were.
Cardio is a big part of staying in shape, and most instructors will have you warm up before class by doing laps and other exercises. Not only will you learn different self-defense tactics and strategies, but you'll also get your body into shape.
