Increase Your Home Security For Under $10
Here are a couple of very easy things you can do to increase your home security and not spend a lot of money doing it. In fact, if you have to spend more than ten bucks to do all this, odds are you way overspent.
The first thing you are going to do is replace the hinge screws on your exterior doors.
Replacing hinge screws can dramatically strengthen the door.
Most doors are installed with very short screws, maybe an inch or so in length. While they’ll hold the door up just fine, one swift kick at the door and they’ll pop right out. Replace these screws with longer ones and they’ll substantially increase the strength of that door.
This is a very simple procedure, even for the anti-DIY folks out there. Head down to the hardware store and buy a pack of 3″ wood screws. These longer screws will be able to go through the thin frame and into the studs.
If you aren’t sure how thick they need to be, you can take out one of the existing screws and take it with you. Don’t worry, the door will be just fine while you’re gone.
Use a screwdriver or a drill/driver to swap out the old screws for the new ones. Go one at a time so you don’t end up having to rehang the door. Repeat this process for each exterior door.
All told, those screws shouldn’t cost you more than a few bucks at most.
Wind Chime as an Alarm
The second thing you will do is install a low-tech alarm system on those doors. Now, bear with me as this gets complicated.
- Step one: Head to your local thrift store.
- Step two: Locate and purchase one loud and obnoxious wind chime for each exterior door. They shouldn’t cost you more than a couple bucks a piece.
- Step three: Hang said wind chimes on the interior side of each door.
You don’t need to keep them there 24/7. Just have them near each door and hang them up at night when you check the locks before heading to bed. The idea here is that if someone comes into the home through one of those doors, you’ll hear the wind chimes and be alerted to their presence.
There you go. As you can see, it doesn’t take much to improve your home security. Ten bucks and you’re well on your way to a more secure home!
