How Pepper Spray Works

Pepper spray's active ingredient — Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) — delivers an immediate inflammatory response causing temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, and intense burning. Effects are involuntary and not dependent on pain tolerance, making it effective regardless of adrenaline or substance use. Effects last 30–45 minutes with no permanent injury. Major Capsaicinoids (MC) percentage is the most reliable strength indicator — 1.2% MC and above is considered police strength. The OC concentration percentage listed on most canisters is less meaningful than the MC rating.

Pepper Spray vs. Pepper Gel

Spray and gel formulas have meaningfully different performance characteristics. Standard stream and cone sprays disperse into the air — effective but susceptible to wind blowback in outdoor conditions. Pepper gel is a thick, sticky formula that adheres to the target on contact, resists wind, and doesn't disperse into the surrounding air. Gel is the recommended formula for home defense — it sprays accurately, sticks to an attacker's face, and won't contaminate the air around you or others in the space. For outdoor use in variable wind conditions, gel is also the stronger choice. Browse dedicated pepper gel options for the full gel lineup.

Keychain Pepper Spray

Keychain sprays in the 0.5 oz range stay on your keys and are instantly reachable without digging through a bag — the most practical everyday carry format. Effective range is typically 6–10 feet. The trade-off is canister size — a keychain spray has fewer bursts than a standard 2–4 oz canister. For dedicated keychain options including compact gel formulas, browse the keychain pepper spray collection.

Pepper Ball Launchers

Pepper ball launchers fire OC-filled projectiles from up to 150 feet — the maximum standoff distance in the collection by a significant margin. CO2-powered, they're the right tool for property defense and situations where you need to stop a threat before it reaches you. Browse the pepper ball launcher collection for available models.

Shop by Brand

Three primary brands cover most of the collection. Mace is the original pepper spray manufacturer — Triple Action formula combining OC, CN tear gas, and UV marking dye. Wildfire uses a 1.4% MC maximum heat formula — among the strongest civilian formulas available. Pepper Shot delivers 1.2% MC police-strength formula at a more accessible price point. All three brands are stocked and ship from the US.

How to Choose the Right Pepper Spray

For everyday carry, a keychain spray stays accessible without thought. For outdoor use in wind, gel formula prevents blowback. For home defense, gel is the recommended choice — accurate, adhesive, and contained. For maximum standoff distance on a property, a pepper ball launcher has no equal in this category. New to pepper spray — an inert practice spray lets you build muscle memory with the exact same motion before carrying live spray. Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states though some states limit concentration or canister size — always verify local regulations before ordering.
