Safer Apartment

There’s no doubt that getting out on your own and living in your first apartment is a very exciting time. There is a new found freedom, you make the rules and you can let your decorating style take over. Read over these steps to ensure you have a safer apartment.

Apartment living has always appealed to me because you’re living in close proximity to a lot of other people and if you’re a social butterfly then this is your heaven.

But this can be a double edge sword. Living close to other people takes away a huge privacy factor. People are more aware of your schedule, when you come and go, nights you tend to stay out with friends, when your boyfriend or girlfriend is there or away, whether you have pets or not.

Ten Ways to Stay Safe in an Apartment

Because of this type of lifestyle, it is extra important that you take steps to protect yourself and your property. Here are ten ways to make your apartment life a lot safer:

Steps 1-5 of a Safer Apartment

  1. When choosing an apartment, make sure you familiarize yourself with the area and scope out the current tenants and surrounding neighborhoods. For example, just because the apartment is next to a college, doesn’t necessarily mean you want to shop or mingle in the nearby stores and neighborhoods.
  2. Try to get an apartment on a floor other than the first floor. I know it can be an inconvenience to climb flights of stairs but ground level apartments are more likely to get broken into because they are more easily accessible. Plus, those stairs offer a great workout!
  3. Make sure that all windows and doors have working locks and report any problems to management immediately. Chances are you aren’t the first person to live there which means other people may know of faulty entrances to your home.
  4. Get familiar with the layout of your apartment complex. Know where to check your mail and where the garbage goes. Watch out for areas that are secluded by shrubs or trees where someone could be hiding and waiting to attack. Stay away from areas that are poorly lit at night.
  5. Keep your porch light on at night and you may want to consider keeping an inside light or TV on while you’re away to make people think someone is inside your home.

Tips 6-10 of a Safer Apartment

  1. Find out exactly who has access to your apartment beside yourself and find out management’s policy on entering your unit. This is a good reason to keep a neat and tidy apartment. If someone enters your place and moves things around you will be more likely to realize something’s wrong. If you ever come home to something out of place such as an open door leave immediately and call the police.
  2. Never open the door to strangers and use a peephole. If you must open the door for some reason, place the heel of your foot on the floor and the ball of your foot on the door at an angle. If someone tries to force their way in, your foot will stop them and allow you to close and lock the door.
  3. Use inexpensive alarms on your doors and windows. They may not call you or notify the police, but an intruder doesn’t know that and they will definitely get the attention of your neighbors.
  4. Find a neighbor or two and exchange information. Agree to keep watch out for one another.
  5. Get Renter’s Insurance. It is usually extremely cheap and will protect you from burglaries all the way to natural disasters. Most apartments offer this or you can check with your auto insurance company as well.
