Here’s a story that was in USA Today recently about how domestic violence has increased nationwide because of the economy. Law enforcement officials feel that this places more stress on a relationship because of economic hardships.

A law enforcement official was quoted as saying “When stresses in the home increase because of unemployment and other hardships, domestic violence increases,” Thomson said. “We see it on the street.”

Here’s a story about how all a conservation officer in the state of Missouri is warning people to be more bear aware. He mentions that there more bears in Missouri now because of the successful reintroduction program in neighboring state of Arkansas.

The story goes on to say “bears are more visible this time of year because they have been fasting all winter, and many of their natural food sources, such as berries and nuts, aren’t available yet,” says Beringer. “Bears are constantly on the move, and they will check out anything that smells like it might be good to eat.”

You may have heard about this unbelievable story told by a man named Mr. Biggs in Northern California. He claims that he was attacked by a mountain lion and while he was being attacked a bear came by and saved him, fighting off the mountain lion.

Mr. Biggs claims that he was observing the bear and a cub nearby when attacked by a mountain lion. Wildlife officials are very skeptical about the story, but are checking it out.

Here’s a story written by Mark Smith who takes a contrarian view of the dangers of black bears in Nevada. He makes a point that no one was fatally injured by a black bear attack in 2011 in the state of Nevada.

Mr. Smith is writing about the state of Nevada, which is sparsely populated to begin with so the chances of a bear encounter are minimized right off the bat. I agree with him one point-if bears are left alone they are not a danger. If there’s food or young cubs involved that’s another story.

However, we have always suggested that anybody that goes into the back country always carry some Bear Pepper Spray. You never know when you’re in the wilderness when you may encounter a black bear. Right here in our own community last week a woman was walking to her car in a darkened parking lot of a shopping mall. She was approached by a man who was a stranger to her asking for directions. The hair on the back of her neck stood up. Fortunately she had some pepper spray in her purse.

Here’s a true story about a city in Australia, Victoria, which is about ready to get a new tool for their police officers. They have been studying tasers for over a year and finally decided that it’s about time to make a commitment to the less than lethal tool.
