The sheriffs complied and the TV station got a great story. You can read some of what the burglar had to say HERE.
Among the many other things that he had to say off the record was that if the heard a dog barking he would definitely stay away from that home.

One thing they don’t cover is ideas for security for people who live in apartments or for people who travel. One of the best things you can do for apartment living or for room security when you travel is to get the Door Stop Alarm.
It is the perfect security tool for people who live in apartments or for people who travel a lot and stay in hotel rooms. You wedge it underneath a door and it acts as a door stop. If someone tries to force the door open it activates an alarm that is loud enough to wake you if you’re asleep. But it certainly will scare the bad guys away.

 Mace Pepper Gel
Here is a story about a man and his family who were victims of a home invasion. He got attacked by the home invaders and got hit in his forehead from a machete, of all things. You can watch the whole story HEREwith the short YouTube video.
There are two morals to the story. First, if at all possible, do not let the home invasions happen. And second if it does happen it is almost always a bad outcome from the violence involved.
The old expression “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is certainly applicable here.
The best way to prevent a home invasion in the first place is to always use your peephole in your front door. Find out who is there before you reflexively open your front door (like I do). It is a bad habit to get into. Once a home invader has an inch of a door opening he will force his way in. And trust me in 99% of the cases of a home invasion there is violence involved. You don’t want to be part of that.
If the home invaders do get in, make sure that you have some self defense products around the house in more than one location. In my opinion the best one to have around the house is Mace pepper gel. Then I would recommend having a stun gun. One of the smallest and most effective stun guns is the hot shot stun gun. That way if the bad guys do get in, at least you have a chance of defending yourself.

When burglars do their thing and get into your house statistics show that they spend 6 minutes or less on average looking for things that they can easily sell or convert into cash in a pawn shop. They look for things that are easy to carry and are very marketable. Items such as jewelry come to mind.
So where do you hide your valuables to prevent them from being taken in a home burglary?
The best place to hide them is, as they say, in “plain sight.”
That’s why diversion safes have become so popular. They are ordinary looking products that have hollowed out interiors. The containers are relatively small, but big enough to hide cash, jewelry, keys and some other valuables.
This Chips Diversion Safe is a good example.
Check out all of our other Diversion Safes to see if one isn’t good for you. We have nearly 20 to choose from.
