Protect Your Children at Home with Driveway Alarm System

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Even though you want to be at your children’s side 24/7, there are moments when you have no choice but to leave them unsupervised. Mere seconds, however, could be all it takes for someone to harm your children. Don’t wait for that to happen. Protect your children now with a driveway alarm system.

How Driveway Alarm Systems Work
Driveway alarm systems can protect your child from various dangers when installed properly.

Specify Danger Zones
A driveway alarm system is usually capable of monitoring several zones, the number of which depends on the model you have purchased. The areas listed below are something you should consider using the alarm for.

Driveway
Know the exact moment that an intruder attempts to trespass on your property or when your children start to stray from where you’ve left them.

Pool
Children are naturally precocious and this could lead them to try new and dangerous things, like getting into the deeper end of a pool.

Backyard
This is another commonly used entrance for burglars. Installing a driveway alarm system at this area will definitely keep you alert on any break-in attempts.

Create Pre-Recorded Messages for Voice Alert
The driveway alarm system will produce a voice alert every time it’s triggered. Some models allow you to program one message per zone.

In line with this, voice alerts may be used for two purposes. You can use it to alert yourself of the potential danger your child is facing or you can use it to scare burglars away.

If you want to keep yourself informed, you need to make sure that the receiver for the driveway alarm system is located at the place where you’re most likely to be when you’re away from your children. As for the latter, it’s best to install one receiver per zone so that burglars would have the benefit of hearing your warning.

Connect with Loud Speaker
Voice alerts of driveway alarm systems may not be loud enough for you to hear them if you’re at another room. This can be easily solved by connecting your system with a speaker.

Important Features to Consider
When shopping for driveway alarm systems, always look for the model with the widest range possible that you can afford. Secondly, look for a system that allows you to speak through its transmitter. Check if it comes up with backup battery power: this will ensure that your driveway alarm system will still work even when you’re suffering from a power failure.

What are the Pitfalls of Using a Home Alarm System

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

There are many factors that contribute to making the home safe to live in – the neighborhood, the location and the vigilance of the homeowners and their neighbors.  A good home alarm system really is just a backup to ensure security and  is an excellent way to boost safety.  Most people rely on their home alarm security to keep them safe, discourage an attack, prevent a burglary and generally deter crime.  But did you know there are limitations to this system?  Here are the most common pitfalls of using a home alarm system that you should know about:
Frequently, home alarm systems need some sort of power backup
Probably the most reliable home alarm system is one that is run by electricity.  This is because the homeowner will always be assured that the system is running and that their home is protected.  Unfortunately, there are certain pitfalls associated with this feature.  These include:

- Sudden loss of power, which could occur during a blackout or power outage
- Tampering of the power line by a potential burglar
- Mechanical failure in the system itself due to power surges

To correct this, most home alarm systems may come with an alternative source of power, such as batteries so the system will continue to run.  The only drawback is that if the homeowner is too careless or unmindful of his home alarm system, batteries could run out of power and the system will simply not work.  Should a burglar come around at this time, the home will be very vulnerable to an intrusion.

There is a gap between the trigger and the reaction
There are monitored home alarm systems in which the homeowner’s system is connected to a third party, usually a company that provides an alert service.  In case the alarm is tripped due to a burglary, the company will call the homeowner, wait for a confirmation that it is not a false alarm and then alert the nearest security personnel (usually a police department) to check on the premises.

In this system, there are pitfalls that homeowners should be aware about.  First, the third party usually waits for up to 45 seconds before calling the homeowner for confirmation after the alarm is tripped.  That’s usually enough time for a burglar to steal a few things and leave before the homeowner confirms the integrity of the alarm.

Second, it could take the police several minutes to arrive – enough time for a skillful burglar to make off with some of the valuables he finds in the house.

Third, if the third party does make that call, there is no guarantee that it will be answered 100% of the time.  The homeowner may be sound asleep, unable to come to the phone or the phone may be defective due to mechanical or electrical failure.

To avoid this pitfall, the homeowner should ask about an option such as using a mobile phone or even a radio to confirm with the third party.  This will ensure that his home and valuables are safe, the occupants are protected against physical harm and that his home alarm system is working properly.

Using a Home Alarm System? Avoid Making These Mistakes and Keep Your Home Safe

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Yes, it comes with a user guide and the technician who helped install it probably explained the details of its proper use and operation.  However, a home alarm system can still cause some confusion in many homeowners.  Confusion that can sometimes lead to unfortunate mistakes that render the system useless, cause damage to its most critical parts or even void its warranty.  Here’s how you can avoid making mistakes in using a home alarm system of your own:

Understand what you need in a home alarm system
Overestimating or underestimating your home’s security needs is probably the first mistake that people make in using a home alarm system.  Most people just simply decide they need a security system and then go out and buy one that: a) offer the cheapest deal;   b) seems simple enough to install and use or c) so advanced that it could keep out even the whole Ocean’s Eleven gang.

The key to ensuring that you get a home alarm system that not only keeps your home safe but also gives you value is to find out first what type of security needs you have.  Your security concerns are unique, so try to consider these issues first prior to purchase and usage.

Know what you’re buying
There is nothing more perplexing than a homeowner that expects more than what his system could give.  Home alarm systems come in different designs and configurations to fit a homeowner’s unique needs.  When using a home alarm system, learn about its features and functions and find out what it can and cannot do.  Do not expect your alarm to work at 20 feet if it can only detect intrusion from 10 feet away.  Determine its strengths and vulnerabilities so you have a better understanding how it works and how to use it.

Follow instructions
There are certain limitations to each home alarm system in terms of:

- choice of location for installation
- performance in relation to certain factors such as weather and general environment
- the homeowners themselves

Although the manufacturer will probably give you tips on how to install and run the home alarm system properly, you do have to follow the instructions it came with.

Recognize a malfunction if and when it occurs
Home alarm systems can and will malfunction, usually due to wear and tear.  Check your system periodically and have it maintained by an authorized technician to ensure that it works.  Remember that a malfunction can make your system vulnerable, so it pays to be observant.

Respect your agreement with the manufacturer or security company
Another common mistake to avoid when using a home alarm system is to perform your own repairs during the warranty period.  By tinkering with the device, you effectively void the warranty it came with.
